News Release

NJAC calls for the recall of the 2010 budget presented to the Parliament on Monday 7 September. NJAC notes with concern, the wide cross section of the population which has expressed dissatisfaction with the budget .There has been a general lack of support for the majority of measures outlined.

The 2010 Budget reeks of a lack of preparedness, in particular the property tax which evidently has not been thought out in terms of its impact on the middle and lower income bracket of property owners.

In the national interest, NJAC calls on the government to forget its pride and ego and have meaningful consultations with the various stakeholders in the country, with a view to presenting a more acceptable budget.

NJAC believes that what is needed in a time of recession, such as we are experiencing now, is a budget that would provide some measure of hope for the population and point the direction to economic recovery.

The failure to heed this call will lead to greater despair that would result in increased levels of crime, violence, untold suffering and hardship among large sections of the population.

NJAC again stresses that the budget needs to be recalled in the national interest.
