Emancipation to Republic Rally
Retracing our footsteps
National Youth Action Committee (NYAC)
The ‘Emancipation to Republic’ Rally is annually hosted by National Youth Action Committee (NYAC). This rally was first launched in September 2002 to an enthusiastic audience of primary and secondary students.
This rally depicts the story of our ancestors: the struggle of slavery, the hardships of indentureship and the growing pains of nationhood. It will be told to give an account of our journey. Voices will be lifted in song. Songs that reflect who we are as a people: calypso, pichakaree, chutney and spirituals. Drums will echo as they beat the rhythms of the people. All will captivate the imagination and take the audience to another time where they can “retrace our footsteps”.
The committee believes in fostering a greater sense of national pride and social responsibility in the youth. The aim of creating a mindset in which the experiences of our ancestors will not only be appreciated but impact upon the NOW.
